Places to Catch and Not just Visit
We fished with friends, in his home waters of Estero Bay. Capt. John knows his waters well and when conditions are right, fishing can be awesome. During a full moon, we targeted tailing Redfish on a negative low tide and despite breezy conditions, they tailed well. We had lots of shots at tailing reds, hooked 3 and landed 2, most were caught on DOA crab. After seeing Capt John big red pounce on a DOA crab with no hesitation, we will be throwing that lure more often!
iOutdoors fished my friend, Jim & Jonnie from Stuart, FL. They fished potholes and shallow grass flats from north St Lucie River and caught and released a few sea trout on poping coaks. Very surprised to see an adult coyote, stalking birds and digging shellfish out of the bottom about a ½ mile from shore on an exposed flat. We often see raccoons prowling flats or shorelines but this is the first time. I’ve never seen a coyote on saltwater shorelines.
Tommy and his son Jeffery, from NC, fished Jupiter Inlet with us on Friday. They had good action catching and releasing trout, Snook, Redfish, and blues on DOA Deadly Combos. The best action was with Snook to 15-pounds on topwater plugs in 12’-13’ foot of water. We got in on the action, catching and releasing five Snook in the 15-pound range all in the same area. It’s so much fun to watch schools of Snook blow up on bait and hit plugs!
In conclusion

Big trout are also moving into shallow water in the Everglades where you may find Snook along with Reds in wood or on the edges of bars when the tide is high and low. Many ask “Can you eat sea trout and are they delicious?” Joe, Bob and their friend asked this to Captain Brian while out on the water. They had no intention of keeping any fish as they practice catch-and-release. Captain Brian kindly asked if he could keep two for his family as they love to eat sea trout.

iOutdoor Marathon fishing Captain’s have been guiding anglers to trophy size Permit in the Florida Keys already this year!
Marathon Springtime fishing is the best time to catch trophy permit. They are in schools and come together over wrecks and other offshore structure. This happens all along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts. These large schools are because they are spawning. We catch them with crabs using Berkley Trilene professional braid 20-pound braided line with Berkley Trilene 100% Fluoro 30-pound leader. During different times of the day, they have a tendency to come up to the surface. At times you can sight cast to them even in the deep water.
It’s not uncommon at these times around Marathon to catch a Permit between 20 to 30-pounds. While many love to hunt the huge permit, many have passed the offering because of the incredible fight that can take up to 30 minutes. It’s not long for a baited crab meet its end when they are biting in the Springtime. Some of the bigger Permit stay on the bottom and will come up from below to eat a crab, when they do you will have to battle that huge permit.
To add to the excitement and fight of a Permit, bull sharks roamed the same waters, tring to make meals of many hooked permit. Luckily this year the sharks seem to have been laying low and haven’t bothered us this year. In past years we have had issues with the sharks attacking hooked Permit during the fight. In the Florida Keys, this kind of behaviour is not uncommon from sharks even while tarpon fishing. It’s something you learn to work around and deal with!
Things to know about Marathon Springtime fishing
The current Florida record is 56 pounds and 2 ounces caught near Fort Lauderdale, while the world record was caught in 2002 from Brazil weighed an even 60 pounds.
Permit are grayish, dark or iridescent blue on top, and have silvery sides. In dark waters, the fish shows golden tints around their breasts. They possess teeth on their tongues, no scutes, and have a dorsal fin insertion directly above that of their anal fin. The common size of this species is 25 pounds. Permit are seen in schools of 10 to 20 fish, they also travel in larger numbers and their diet consists mainly of crab but they eat shrimp, clams and sometimes small fish as well. Snook are strictly regulated to protect it from over fishing. They will normally reply that it was one of the best tasting fish that they have ever had. The meat is white, with medium density and a mild subtle taste.With countless recipes online a quick search will bring up a plethora of options to choose. remember to remove the skin or your gonna have a bad time. Anyways a favorite among many is the deep fried fish method. But which every way you like to prepare them this is definitely a tasty fish unless you don’t take the skin off then its not.
Snook can be found in south and central Florida mostly inshore brackish and coastal waters. they can also be found along man made structures mangroves, and shorelines and Large schools form in summer for spawning.

Hank Brown, revered as one of the best light-tackle fishing guides to ever prowl the flats of Islamorada and the Florida Bay backcountry, died late Monday. He was 86.
Capt. Brown’s list of happy anglers includes former President George H.W. Bush, First Lady Barbara Bush and former Islamorada resident Ted Williams, who also played a little baseball with the Red Sox.
“Hank was a great tarpon fisherman, one of the best ever in my opinion,” said Charlie Causey, an Islamorada angler who won the prestigious Don Hawley Invitational Tarpon Tournament in 1986 with Brown at the helm.
“Work ethic got him where he was, but being a great guide is more than just experience,” Causey said. “To be really good, you need a feel for the fish. And Hank could feel the fish in his bones.”
The Hawley was the first major tarpon tournament to require releases, a position strongly supported by Capt. Brown.
He was considered among Islamorada’s elite fishing guides, coveted by anglers as their skipper for limited-entry fly-fishing contests. Capt. Brown often is ranked among Keys fishing legends Jimmy Albright, Billy Pate, Cecil Keith and Eddie Wightman.
“Hank was a fishing pioneer and a legend,” said Mike Forster, Mangrove Mike’s restaurant owner who considers Capt. Brown “my Keys father, mentor and friend.”
“He was a great all-around guy who made time for everybody, especially children,” Forster said. “On his charters, he’d help people get fish and also teach them about preserving the Keys resources.”
A Maryland native, Capt. Brown left the business world to devote full-time to his fishing career that lasted for four decades. In 1982, he started selling his Hook Up lures, jigs specially designed for light tackle on flats and “skinny water.” The business continues under owners who sell the popular line of Capt. Hank Brown’s Hook Up Lures.
Capt. Brown’s willingness to explore new waters of Florida Bay and chase fish anywhere earned him the good-natured moniker of Run Aground Brown.
He was a longtime member and officer of the associations that worked on behalf of fishing guides and protection of the local waters.
“It takes a long time to be considered a top guide, and Hank Brown was,” Causey said. “Hank had a great sense of humor and it was great to be in a boat with him. But when it came time to fish, he was all business and expected you to do the things that needed to be done.”
Hank Brown is survived by wife Joy, son Michael and daughter Michele. Details of a memorial service will be announced.
